LAS   NIEVES   RAID

Spring  Raid  -  Saturday 19th April,  2008

This equestrian event is a test of the horse’s fitness and soundness, and a test of correct preparation by the rider (with a little luck thrown in!).

The above event will have two classes with different distances.

Class 1 will be a distance  of approximately 25 - 30 kms to be ridden at a speed of between 8 km and 14 kms.  Horses will be vetted both before and after the event and at the after ride vetting (which takes place half an hour after finishing) the horse’s pulse must be 64 or less and the horse must be sound and not distressed.   Completion rosettes are given to horses who pass this test, and two Grade rosettes are also awarded, based on the pulse of the horse and the speed the distance is ridden, i.e.  a pulse of say 54 of over, no matter what the speed was, would earn a completion rosette, a pulse between 44 and 54 could earn a Grade l or 2 depending on the speed ridden and what the actual pulse was.  A pulse of under 44 would earn a Grade 1 so long as the speed was 10 kms or more.  It is a type of sliding scale, and the aim is to get as low a pulse as possible, whilst riding at a reasonable speed,  but it is |NOT a race.

Class 2 is a type of training/pleasure ride, where pulse and soundness is still a factor.  It must be ridden at a speed of between 7 km and 12 km per hour.  At the after ride vetting, the pulse must be 64 or under, as Class 1 and the horse sound.  This will earn a completion rosette.  (All rosettes are specially printed and of good size !)

Horses are timed out and leave every minute or two and can ride alone or in pairs or in threes, according to choice. (But not in large groups).

There are checkpoints en route - about four in Class 1 and three in Class 2.   These will all have water for horses and riders.

The ride will have very little road work and there will be no main roads.

The route is (well) marked with day-glo tape and it is not meant to be an orienteering exercise !

We have two vets on duty and their decision on pulse and fitness etc. is final and decides what Grade, if any, is awarded.

The event can be ridden in any tack, including boots, although only a bridle for the vettings.

Riders must wear hard/safety hats.

Horses can be unshod, and whips can be carried   -   long (dressage) whips can be carried by riders on stallions but all other horses must only carry the shorter whip.

There will be a beer tent, which will also sell food.

This will be the third event to be held, and it has proved to be very popular - there were 21 starters in last April’s event and 58 in last October’s event.

It is a great sport and very rewarding, and you get the chance to ride through lovely countryside, including private land.
